About the event

Please join the University Park Woman’s Club as we welcome our guest speaker, Nicole Burton. Ms. Burton is an author and playwright who has written over 20 plays. Her plays include Wednesdays in Mississippi; Fred and Frieda; and Starman, Wish Me Luck, which have been produced in theaters and venues as diverse as federal prisons, homeless shelters, and the U.S. Capitol. She’s also the author of Swimming Up the Sun – A Memoir of Adoption and Adamson’s 1969, A Novel. Nicole is a member of Pipeline Playwrights, a DC area women's theater.

Nicole will talk to us about Wednesdays in Mississippi which tells the story of Dorothy Height and Polly Cowan who launched a civil rights project in 1964 amidst killings, threats, and bombings. The women forged alliances, helped integrate the schools, and aided the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. The play is adapted from the nonfiction book by Debbie Z. Harwell and directed by Rikki Howie Lacewell.

Members and all those interested in learning more about the University Park Woman's Club are encouraged to attend. Please RSVP via email, and we will be happy to welcome you to our next event. There is no cost to attend. Should you wish to join or support the club, annual dues are $35.  Donations for The Penny Project fundraiser will be collected. We hope to see you on the first Monday each month!
